Will A Shot Help My Back Pain?
Whether the result of an injury or a chronic condition like arthritis, back pain is extremely common. Back pain is one of the most common health concerns in the US, and one of the top reasons people miss work. Without treatment, back pain can linger for months or even years. What are the pain management options? Who is a good candidate for a steroid injection?

How steroid shots work
A cortisone injection aims to reduce inflammation quickly. Often, the shot is administered into the epidural space of the spine. This is the fatty area around the spinal sac that provides cushioning for the nerves. When the spinal column narrows for any reason, the resulting inflammation can cause debilitating pain.
How fast is the relief?
Usually, the doctor will use an anesthetic along with the steroid shot to lessen pain. After the anesthetic wears off, patients may feel pain in the first 24-48 hours after the injection. However, the steroid typically begins to take effect within 1-3 days, although some patients may need to wait up to a week to feel relief. For most people, pain relief lasts for a few months. People may need additional shots to keep back pain at bay.
How many shots can I get?
Too many injections do come with a risk of damaging the cartilage in the joint. For this reason, patients are typically advised not to get steroid injections more than 3-4 times per year. Injections should be scheduled at least 6 weeks apart.
Understanding pain management
Like with other pain management strategies, a steroid shot cannot cure pain completely. Instead, the treatment is a technique for managing the symptoms associated with back pain. A pain management specialist may also prescribe pain-relieving medications or anti-inflammatories. Patients may also be referred to a physical therapist. These healthcare providers help patients get stronger and provide exercises for mobility and flexibility. Often, people who experience chronic back pain learn to move in ways that compensate for the pain but don’t offer long-term improvements. Physical therapy can help patients learn to move more safely.
Am I a good candidate?
Some of the most common conditions that can benefit from steroid injections include spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, herniated discs, sciatica, and degenerative disc disease. In general, patients who have pain that stems from inflammation could benefit from a steroid shot. Individual risk factors must be discussed between the patient and the doctor.
